GED File Extension

Have you run across a file type called .GED? I haven’t and it got me curious what the file type does. This is another file extension that may look harmless but is sometimes masked as a virus.

The File Extension GED was originally created by the Mormon Church to make computer searches more efficient. It is usually used to store family history and genealogical event data in ASCII text format and can be opened by different genealogy programs. This data is in standard GEDCOM (GEnealogical Data COMmunications) format

However, aside from genealogy the File Extension GED is also used in game creation programs. The data stored in the .GED is created with Game Editor and includes game data and settings as well as resources. Game Editor is an application for developing games in Windows and Linux systems.
