How to know when a photo has been manipulated

So your friend showed you a photo of him with this hot chick. You don’t want to believe it but it looked like the real thing. So how do you become an image forensic expert to see if the photo is manipulated or not?

You don’t have to be. Just go to Image Error Level Analyser to upload the JPEG image and let the computer detect if any manipulation has been done to the photo or not. It’s pretty geeky how the owner of the site explains how the algorithm works:

“Error level analysis (ELA) works by intentionally resaving the image at a known error rate, such as 95%, and then computing the difference between the images. If there is virtually no change, then the cell has reached its local minima for error at that quality level. However, if there is a large amount of change, then the pixels are not at their local minima and are effectively original.”

Before when I need to catch up with my TV viewing, I go to Project TV. It has a good number of streaming TV selections with updated links even for older episodes or season. However, I found a site with a much better look and navigation complete with over 120 TV shows with high quality streaming.

TVGorge is an online video portal for popular TV shows. From American Idol to Glee to Dexter, they have it streaming here. When you click on a TV show, not only you will see the show but also have quick access to the other episodes of that series.

It’s not as large of a database but they are currently working on adding more shows onto the site. What I like about it is it’s very intuitive navigation and clean, professional-looking design. I’m hoping they add more shows soon.

Avatara’s turns your avatar into The Sims

If you’re bored with the look of the avatar on your social network profile, why not customize something in 3D. Customizing your Yahoo! Avatars is fun but try Avatara and you will have a blast.

Avatara allows you to create 3D avatars that you can easily post on multiple social networks. If you’re familiar with the games The Sims, creation of your avatar is quite similar. You can choose from a selection of faces, skin, eyes, hair and body types to begin with. Finally, you can select your clothing and do some final customizations from there.

Avatara is free to use and doesn’t require you to sign up to try. If you want to actually use your creation, you have to register and log in. Once you are ready to send out your avatar, you can also give it some animations such as dancing, coughing, bowing, etc.

You may have lots of nice photos from your recent vacation but you don’t know what picture to set as your wallpaper. You don’t want to use Windows 7’s rotating wallpaper and you don’t want to download a software just to make a collage of your vacation photos.

Try Photovisi. It’s a FREE online service where you can create a collage of your photos simply by choosing a template and uploading your pictures.

Once done, you can save your customized collage and set it as your wallpaper or have it printed or forward to somebody else.

One thing that’s lacking is the option as to what size you want the image to be saved at. It’s only 1024x768 so you can’t use it as your wallpaper if you’re on a higher resolution.

Nerrot is probably the most simplest torrent site out there. In fact, it’s so simple that they only have one page, only for the search box. Just key in your search term (the more specific the better) and it will searche for the closest match with the highest ratio of seeders (healthiest swarm), then automatically downloads what it determines to be the best torrent file for your search.

It’s that simple. Search and download. I won’t recommend this to those who don’t have a fast connection though. You don’t want to be wasting all those bandwidth thinking you got the right stuff when you really don’t.

Typekit allows you to use different fonts for your website

Tired of using the same fonts over and over again when designing a website? Do you want to break away from the mold by using a fresh font for your site? Nope, I’m not suggesting you use an image as replacement.

Typekit allows you to pull fonts from their server so you can use it in your site. So why can’t you do it on your own you say? Well there’s this thing called “copyright” that even if the fonts are free, you can’t simply redistribute it to the web.

With Typekit, you don’t have to worry about those restrictions. They work with font foundries to develop a web-only font linking license. But wait, before you stop reading, they also offer a free subscription where you can choose fonts from their trial library.

The only limitation for the free subscription is that you are only allowed 5GB of bandwidth per month and you can only use two fonts per site as well as put a Typekit badge. Not bad for a small, personal blog site.
